Chicago to Duluth by water

Is there a way to travel by water between Chicago and Duluth, such as a cruise or ferry system? - Richard, Knoxville, Tenn.

We sure wish there was a ferry between Chicago and Duluth!

The Great Lakes Cruising Company does have 12-day cruises from Chicago to Duluth. They're not cheap, but they hit a bunch of highlights on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior Milwaukee, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Bayfield.

If you're interested in traveling from Duluth to Chicago, and you'd like a once-in-a-lifetime ride on a historic schooner, you could get lucky, because 2013 is a big year on the Great Lakes.

The non-profit Tall Ships Challenge is returning to commemorate War of 1812 battles, and some schooners offer passage between towns.

Tall Ships Duluth is July 24-30; then the ships perhaps 10 or more will travel to Chicago for its festival Aug. 7-12.
