Looking for fall girlfriend getaway in Wisconsin

We are seven ladies looking for a vacation home to stay in for a fall weekend, but we're flexible at this point on where to go likely somewhere within three or four hours of Madison. We prefer not to share beds, which makes this difficult to find. - Julie, DeForest, Wis.

I often travel with girlfriends, and you're right it's hard to find seven beds. Almost anyone should be able to share a king, though.

First, I'd pick a destination. I always pick a place where there's something fun going on say, a fall festival.

Then, go to the town's website, looking for "vacation rentals,'' and to VRBO.

Here are some sample destinations with lodgings:

Oktoberfest in New Glarus, Sept. 28-30.

Stay at Chalet Landhaus, where rooms have two beds. I've stayed there with five girlfriends.

For more, see Swiss at heart.

Oktoberfest in Lake Geneva, Oct. 6-7.

This VRBO house in downtown Lake Geneva has seven beds and availability that weekend; reserve ASAP.

For more, see Gawking in Lake Geneva.

Autumn Harvest Fest in Wisconsin Dells, Oct. 13-14.

There are all kinds of condos you can rent here; the Wilderness Resort has a big selection. There are also plenty of VRBO houses, including this one with seven bedrooms. I also like the cabins at wooded Birchcliff Resort, though you'd have to get two.

For more, see The quiet side of the Dells.

Southwest Wisconsin Fall Art Tour, Oct. 19-21.

This tour includes Mineral Point, Spring Green and Baraboo. My first choice would be Mineral Point and the Brewery Creek Inn, where rooms have sofa sleepers (the six of us stayed there, too!).

For more, see Beauty in Mineral Point.

However, lodgings book up pretty far in advance for this popular tour. You also could try the House on the Rock Resort in Spring Green, which has two-room suites. I've stayed there with a girlfriend.
