Looking for getaway like Duluth, but less crowded

We want to go on a weekend getaway a couple of hours from the Twin Cities. Looking for a place near water with beautiful views, cooler weather, some cozy coffee shops and book shops. Something similar to Duluth, but not touristy/crowded/busy. Would prefer a place with hotels nearby too. Something relaxed, laid-back, cooler and cozy. - Mehri

Well, you'll only get cooler weather if you head north, to Lake Superior.

I recommend Washburn, on the Bayfield Peninsula, an hour and half east of Duluth. It has one of the region's best bookstores, great restaurants and a theater, and it's very laid back.

Our story about Washburn is for winter, but go to the Trip Tips and you'll get info: Winter in Washburn.

Another possibility is its neighbor on Chequamegon Bay, Ashland. For more, see City on Chequamegon Bay.
