Girlfriend getaway near Madison in March

I'm looking for a girls getaway weekend in March in Madison, Wis., or nearby. Any suggestions? Thanks. - Laurie, Madison, Wis.

Madison is fun, but if you live there, you might as well get away.

I've gone to the Wisconsin Dells' indoor water parks several times with girlfriends, and it was a lot of fun. If you feel like a lazy getaway, try that if you can go midweek in early March, but if you go in the last half of March, they'll be full of families on spring break. For more, see Making waves.

I'd go with Mineral Point. I've been there with girlfriends twice once in the countryside at Maple Wood Lodge, a lovely place, and once at Brewery Creek Inn, where rooms have sofa sleepers that unfold in front of the gas fireplace. There's a pub downstairs, a gourmet-pizza place across the street and lots of shops and galleries.

You also could take a class at Shake Rag Alley Center for Arts & Crafts, which is offering 19 of them during its Garden Getaway weekend March 27-28.

For more about Shake Rag Alley, see Slinging cement in Mineral Point. For more about the town, see Mining for art in Mineral Point.

From Mineral Point, you could take an excursion to New Glarus and Monroe, both of which have good places to eat and shop. It might be fun to tour a cheese factory, too. For more, see Swiss at heart and Cheese country.

Be sure to stop by the Bargain Nooks in Mineral Point, New Glarus and Darlington for Land's End catalog returns at amazing prices. For more, see Power shopping in Wisconsin.
