Looking for a great resort restaurant near Eagle River, Wis.

We want to host a 50th anniversary dinner for my in-laws near Eagle River, Wis., or in the surrounding area. I'm hoping for a luxury resort restaurant with excellent ambiance and food. What can you recommend? Does it exist? It could be a stand-alone restaurant. - Jennifer, Glencoe, Ill.

It's not easy to find a great restaurant in the deep north woods, as you probably know. It's even harder to find one in a great resort.

One of the best restaurants in the Eagle River area is Lanny's Fireside, on U.S. 45 between Eagle River and Land O' Lakes. Run by chef Lanny Studdard, it still doesn't have a website, but you can read the Yelp reviews.

You could stay at nearby Wild Eagle Resort, on the northern edge of Eagle River's Chain of Lakes. Wild Eagle is a large condominium resort and caters to group gatherings. It also has its own restaurant.

Just south of Minocqua, Jacobi's of Hazelhurst is traditionally very good. It doesn't have a website, either, but you can call it at 715-356-5591.

Minocqua has lots of luxury lodgings; see Summer in Minocqua.

If you like a rustic-but-luxe atmosphere, and you have money, we do know a resort with amazing ambiance: the very genteel, classic Coon's Franklin Lodge near Arbor Vitae, north of Minocqua. Meals are included.

For a historic and rustic but not so luxe resort, you could look into Voss' Birchwood Lodge in Manitowish Waters. It has a restaurant with lots of ambiance and is just down the road from the famous Little Bohemia, which serves steaks and other north-woods fare.
