B&B or inn in Madison?

We'll be traveling to the Madison area next month and are looking for lodging. With several family members and friends in the vicinity, we need a place where we can easily come and go. We prefer to avoid the typical chain hotels, and generally stay in inns or B&Bs. Any recommendations? - Cindy, St. Paul

We like the Arbor House Inn on Monroe Street, south of downtown. It's right across the street from the arboretum and not too far away from freeways. The owner and staff are very attentive: See our story Hosts with the most.

And watch for the reopening of the Mansion Hill Inn, near Capitol Square and Lake Mendota. I thought it was fabulous when I stayed there 10 years ago, but it was purchased by the Trek people in March 2008, and they've been renovating it.
