Volunteering at Rock Island lighthouseWhen can my husband and myself apply to be lighthouse keepers at Rock Island? Summer 2010, I'm a 50-year-old former elementary teacher and now high-school guidance counselor. My husband, age 51, is a retired police officer. We are physically in great health and have been to Rock Island to camp before. - Elaine, Mapleton, Ill.
The Friends of Rock Island State Park recruit volunteer live-in docents to spend a week at the 1858 Pottawatomie Light on Rock Island, at the farthest tip of Door County. It's open daily from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and is the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin.
In fall, the Friends will post the docent applications on their site, so check then. This year, applications were due by March 1.
It would be smart to join the Friends association now. A family membership is $25 per year.
